I have only a few hundred miles on a kicker gear, clutch gear replacement I did on a '64 FL 4 speed. I took the cover off and found the ramps to be damaged-dented, probably more than the old gear I replaced. Is there something I might have overlooked? If I recall I set the clutch gear a distance from the trans housing- is there anything else I should look at?
Thanks!

Re: Kicker gear ramp wear
I suspect that Uncle Floyd is turning over in his grave, again.
Can anyone find anything similar to the Clymer passage in a real manual?
(My books are at the shop, where the internet ain't allowed to go.)
"....above the transmission housing gasket surface" doesn't even make sense to me, since the shaft is horizontal. It seems likely that the taper may easily be overtorqued by trying to accomplish a typographical error.

HD Manual reads:
What all did you replace when you rebuilt? Hopefully more than just the gears, yes?
Any tighter than that and you could crack the clutch."Be careful not to draw down (starter clutch) nut too tight. Don't go beyond a point where top of starter clutch is less than 5/8 in. above edge of gear box."

Page 280 of the Clymer panhead manual:
That what you mean?"Tighten the starter clutch nut until the top of the starter clutch is 5/8 in. above the transmission housing gasket surface."

Re: Kicker gear ramp wear
Hello. I only replaced all the parts associated with the kicker- gears, bushing, throwout finger, spring. Yes- the 5/8 dimension is the setting I refered to.
I'm thinking if that setting is wrong, and the gear is ourward, then it doesn't allow the kicker gear ramps to come free??
Or I suppose the ramps could be soft.....I got the part from Old dude- didn't come with any tags or marks- but I don't think it was HD either...........
Thanks for the help.
