Gear ratio's on '65 Pan.....
I need advice from an H-D "physics" type who can tell me what kind
of change to expect from my scooter. If and when I place a '23' tooth
motor sprocket on it. At present it has a '24' tooth motor sprocket.
The rest of the drive line is: '22' tooth on tranny so as to run a stock
speedometer and the rear wheel has a '48' tooth sprocket {'75 Super
Glide swingarm/disc brake set up}. AMF/Ride Safe[/img]
Download this little program and run it anywhere on your machine, as it requires no installation:
http://www.terra-glide.net/pgms/WheelSpeed.exe
When you have the program up and running, you can plug in your numbers and see the changes. Click on 4th gear for the FL, and it will put the default numbers in for you.

No rocket science, here. Many years ago, I learned Pascal programming language for DOS, for other work. It was the best thing that I could have done. I started digging out the old formulas, pencil scratching, equations for everything that I had to do at the workbench during some point of engine building. I wrote the wheel speed program, out of a need for figuring my first LSR racer gearing (mid 70's Shovelhead). In later years, I found a cheap copy of Delphi for Windows (what Pascal evolved into). I added some simple graphics and print functions (depending on the program). I still haven't gotten around to all my DOS programs being converted. Just the important bike stuff. When I go on vacation for more than a few days, or during the sometimes long lulls at the LSR track, I break out the laptop and work on my conversions. Or, build something new if this tired old brain gets creative enough.
This is my most used program. The one that I'm working on for land speed racing (LSR) goes through the gears, showing the RPM drop between shifts, and speeds at the top of each gear, just before shifting. That's how I figured out that my 45 LSR bike, running a BT 4-speed, will never get out of 3rd gear before running through the traps for a time/speed stamp. This is on a mile track. At Bonneville, torque is all that I have to worry about having enough of. I'll be able to shift into 4th, easy.
