Starter clutch
Hello again, need some advice. I am putting the starter clutch together on a pan gearbox. The manual says 5/8 off housing ,. At that point the nut is flush with the end of the main shaft but it' is still louse and the clutch gear is only a aproaching snug on the taper. I red somewhere it should be torqued 40 #. That would take it below the 5/8. The local harley dealer says the parts are usable. They came from this box when I took it apart. I think they are original parts. Clutch gear has 2 keyway. What am I Missing? jerry

Re: Starter clutch
The kicker gears should have sharp points on the teeth, the teeth get rounded as they wear.
The outer kicker gear should slide smoothly on shaft and not wobble.
40# torque is good, ignore 5/8, you need a gap between teeth when tightened.

Re: Starter clutch
Thanks 1950panhead, so I torqued it up to 40. and the starter measure is 9/16 off cast. There is still a good 1/8 inch clearance between the teeth so I am good. On my way again thanks for the guidance jerry
