1948 4 speed transmission seal question
I need to replace the main shaft seal in my transmission and just received a new James seal). Q--should the lip on the edge of the seal be installed inward or outward on the spacer?

Re: 1948 4 speed transmission seal question
Hmm--I should have specified that I am referring to the large seal which mounts onto the spacer and is then pressed into the tranny case. ( the 0em seal has an open end which exposes the retaining spring, but James' seal is closed on both sides). Were you referring to this seal or the smaller seal which abuts against the high gear end? I know that the lip on the smaller gear seal points inward. Is this true for the large seal as well?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: 1948 4 speed transmission seal question
All seals are designed so that the end with the rubber lip (most often compressed by an internal spring), faces the source of the oil it is keeping in place. That is a universal seal design.
