Shifter Bracket Bushing

I ordered a new bushing for my foot lever shifter bracket from J&P due to excessive play.

My Panhead is a '59 FLHF. FYI, the shift lever has no splines on it.
Questions:
1) What technique is used to remove the bushing? Pounding, heating, reaming it out?

2) Which direction do you remove it? Inward towards the engine or away?

3) Do you have to remove the entire jiffy stand and press it out?

Does it push out either way? Which way did yours come out from?

mine was loose enough it could have gone either way. i believe i pushed twards the motor.

i could be wrong because i replaced it a little over a year ago.

the new one slid right in too, it did tighten up the shifter quite a bit when i was done so you are on the right track.

My bushing is really stuck. Have any of you heated the bracket up with a torch? I don't want to remove the entire jiffy stand to get this bushing out.


Any suggestions.

you could try 2 deep well sockets and a piece of threaded rod with nuts/washers on each end.

size one socket to be just smaller than the bushing and the other just larger than the bushing.

insert the threaded rod through the middle, nuts on both ends. as you tighten the assembly the smaller socket should push the bushing out. while the larger one will let both the bushing and smaller socket to slide inside.

Thanks! Your tip worked and only cost me $2.75 for the threaded rod and nuts. I would have never got the bushing out by beating on it. I don't think that anyone ever greased the bushing before as there was no grease at all except in the groove where the zirk fitting is. I wonder if I would have shot some grease into the bushing if that would have taken up a lot of the play?

Will see now if I have to press the new one in? Waiting for the part to come.

i would think a couple of large washers and that same threaded rod would press it right back in.
