Length of mainshaft and case. All Shovelhead transmissions were designed for electric start, so all have "ears" on them to bolt to the primary. Panhead do not except for '65 which was the first year electric start. And because of the electric start, mainshafts became longer. First in '66 and then longer yet in '70. Other than the mainshaft the internal parts are the same up to '77. So most bits will interchange.
