Looking for 65A Generator Part
So I've always had trouble sealing my 65A generator to my 1956 cam chest. A friend of mine was visiting the other day, and I showed him the generator, which was off the bike. He told me that the end-cap, the one that mates to the camchest, was not from a 65A generator! No wonder it leaks - the large recessed holes for the bolts that hold the genny together are so big, that the gasket doesn't get "pressed" right near the hub and so it leaks.
Anybody have an end-cap from a 65A that they would be willing to sell? Or trade? I am the proud owner of a 30095-58 which I believe is correct for 1958 - 1959 sportsters and 1958 - 1960 Duo Glides.
If you're interested, please send me a PM.
In this picture, you can see what a 65A end-cap is supposed to look like.
In this picture, you can see the end-cap that I have. Note the large recessed holes and the lack of surface where the arrow is pointing - there's nothing there to seal against the gasket!
Here's a picture of the inside showing the part number.

Re: Looking for 65A Generator Part
Just a picture I pulled off the interweb to show what the correct part looks like.
I'm looking for an OEM piece correct for a 65A generator.

I'm sure I have one, I have a bunch of 65A parts in a basket. I'll dig one out.

Re: Looking for 65A Generator Part
Strange.... No part number on the inside. Anybody know if the genuine 65A part has a casting number?
Also, one of the grooves for the retaining ring looks blown out.....

Re: Looking for 65A Generator Part
Where your leak is coming from can be sealed!.--I know your getting the correct Endcover so you will be good!.Do not use sealer on your gasket!,A VERY light coat of grease will do ,or motoroil will do to!.If you have to seal the one you pictured in the future/Do this--Where the Ring on the cap that slips into the case-cover//Use INDIAN-HEAD COPPER SEALER with the brush attached to cap!.JUST PUT the COPPER sealer around the ring--It wont ooze into motor!.Use your regular gasket lightly oiled & Attach the genny!--Let it dry overnight & you will be golden!.---(I have had the same issues in the past!--This works GOOD!.----Respectfully---RICHIE

Are you sure it's not leaking from the case next to where the generator mounts?

Re: Looking for 65A Generator Part
So far all the factory bases I have found in my stuff are large hole type like you already have. Which gasket are you using? There is a narrow type and a wide type, with the narrow being the older style three brush type.

Re: Looking for 65A Generator Part
VPH-D,
The case is good. No cracks or uneven surfaces. In the past, I've used silicon instead of a gasket and it didn't leak , which would tend to indicate that the case isn't the culprit - but I really don't want to use silicon.

Re: Looking for 65A Generator Part
Robbie,
Thanks for looking through your stuff. Too bad it didn't work out.
I've been using the wide gasket without any success.

Re: Looking for 65A Generator Part
The correct end plate for a 65A is a 30095-61 and is cast iron...the difference in a -58 verses a -61 I don't know. At one time I ordered a -61 from a H-D dealer and got the aluminum one like the ebay one....don't recall if it had a casting # in it or not. The aluminum one that you pictured is a Cycle Electric and is AFTERMARKET, not the correct one for an original -65A...it has 2 extra mounting holes to level the fins on the end mounted regulator!

Re: Looking for 65A Generator Part
UPSROD,
Thanks for confirming the part number. I definitely don't want the after market one. I was just using the picture to illustrate the smaller bolt hole recesses.
Believe it or not, I can't even find a decent picture of a 30095-61 !!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ironhead-Sports ... 4699&rt=nc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Steve, here is a pic of the end plate....it has smaller holes which should seal better and I am guessing the change in the -61!
