Fit Evo Kicker Arm on Panhead?

#1

Post by spinner »

Hi Guys,
Has anyone fit a 1985 Evo one-piece Kicker arm on a Pan?
That is all I got over here.
Trouble is, the locating bolt thru the kicker to the starter shaft is 90 degrees different.
I can rotate the kicker/starter shaft 90 degrees to set the kicker in the correct position, but then the kicker spring won't fit.
Many thx for any help/advice.

The kicker gear fits on the kicker shaft in one position.
You could grind a new bolt hole on the shaft, it would be far better to buy a panhead arm.

Thanks Jerry.
Wanted to use with this one if possible.
The only thing I can see to accommodate it, is to mess with the spring.
If no-one has any other suggestion, I will get an original type shipped over here.
I was sure I had seen this type used in a pic on a Pan somewhere...
Thx again.

I had something like that on my project...

But I replaced it,

Look at my project bike photos and see if that is what your looking for.

Since the many members here have helped me with getting my bikes progress moving forward, IF you can ID the part as being what you are needing,,,,, let me know via PM where it needs to be sent and its yours.

What George Said... I think I have one of the Kickers in my junk box too.

Mr. Cotten said earlier, "Mamma always said...." It's really hard not too. Chrome, yea it's CHROME.

The kicker in the picture has a tendency to fold up on you at the bottom of the kicker stroke and in my opinion will tear your ankle up, especially it the kicker gears slip. Why H-D went to this piss poor design is anybody's guess. I'm thinkin that it was to clear the even worse exhaust systems they used on the late 70's and early to mid 80's FX's. Go with the old style and save yerself some headaches and possibly a trip to the emergency ward. H-D made a number of different offsets for the 54 and later Big Twins, but Sporty and 45 kicker arms will also fit on the Big Twin kicker shaft. The exhaust sytem dictated which kicker arm the "Factory" used....bosheff

Exactly! That's why mine is in the Junk box. I didn't want to pee on his parade but on my '77 when the sissy button didn't work, it was guaranteed that kick lever was going to Hurt your Ass. (My '77 had a Big EPA 2 in 1 exhaust from the Factory.)

sure it will work but you need to change 1 thing...... remove folding kik arm from panhead,,,,, step 2,, pull panhead forward 10 feet,,,,, replace panhead with a late model FXRwxyz ,re-install kik arm.... youll have all the modern conveinences and none of the fuss.............. sorry way short on patients this morning old "greasy rag" post wearing me thin ! What did I say my Mamma said?

I believe there are aftermarket kickshafts that allow both kinds of kickarms to fit, as the groove for the bolt is on all four sides.

Cotton is absolutely correct in his statement bout the kicker shaft with the groove cut all the way around it, but my experience with those pieces of aftermarket blacksmithery have been that they are undersized in comparison with the originals, and no matter how tight you tighten the kicker arm, it still rattles on the shaft even if you use a "genuine" kicker arm....bosheff
