65 FLH - timing and runnig issues....

Hi all,

Presently I have a 65 FLH (in AU) - and have issues with its ignition, timing etc..,
Will start (runs OK) but once in gear will labour and stall..

I have been through the 'Clymer' manual.
Changed:
Plugs, Leads, Condenser, Points - checked flywheel markings etc....as per manual to set gap etc.

Previously it was fine - then an electrical short (in the Inst Panel) - and a stop to riding (oh so fast).
Electrical issue down to 45 yo cables etc.... All fixed now - starts first pop.....

Just this timing issue - I have adjusted it (0.022in/0.56mm) and down....

Any help would appreciated before a trip to the shop...

Dear Steve,
I went through a Clymer book too but then I switched to old phone books. Timing isnt done by adjusting the points. They get set and stay there while you adjust the timer head. Can you get a real manual and maybe a strobe light?

First remove plugs,timing plug and front intake pushrod tube clip. 1-set point gap.2-rotate engine,watch front int :oops: pushrod go up and start down3-locate advance fire mark(line) on flywheel in middle of timing hole.4-hold advancer at full advance and rotate timer head until points just start to open(use light,buzz box,cigarette paper).Timing is now set.5-hang Clymers motorsickle joke book on the nail in the outhouse.

I believe you meant the intake pushrod instead of exhaust

Hi all back again,
Have been away working.

Thanks for the input - much appreciated.

And yes the 'Clymer' is away and I haev managed to get a HD Service Manual.

I have done it all and still little change.
I'm looking at booking it in to the shop for a full service.

I am also looking at adding electronic ignition - any thoughts on this for a 65 FLH.
All that I have seen on the net it appears to be a good addition.
But your thoughts would be helpful.

Steve!

The '65 auto-advance circuit breaker was a very flawed design.

If your machine is already a 'custom', then you may find a modern ignition to be of comfort.
But by all means, safely store the original assembly!

Socalrider!

Other than the breaker base distorting, and the channels for the locknuts becoming knarfed, making precise adjustment difficult,...
The slop between the base and the stem housing allows the points gap to change when the base is adjusted.

H-D re-designed by '66, but the toe that holds the stem housing will not fit properly upon a '65 right motorcase!

If you haven't the patience to work out your original assembly's signs of age, then a generic auto-advance timer may be the lesser evil. They have their own issues (besides ugliness), but they can work.

I have no experience with brand-name electronic assemblies. (Only with Indian true distributors!)

Steve...Electronic ignition is fine ......but you really should get your problem solved before you make the switch to electronic...only my opinion...good luck!
