Kick backs: how do you deal with it

...When kick starting a hot engine ? >Sad

My Pan normally will start after the first kick with half open throttle while hot but I do get those nasty kick backs every other time or so even before I manage to kick the first revolution.
At this point it's like Pan-1 Me-0.. It's been busting my leg pretty good and knowing me it's only a matter of time till I retaliate and kick it back real hard... ;D
Please help..

I usually just rub my leg vigorously and then gingerly walk around until the pain goes away. NEVER EVER kick the bike back! It knows - and you will be sorry.
Seriously - I agree with jarhead that timing might be the problem. Most likely it will have to be retarded slightly.

What I do to avoid that nasty kickback is to leave the ignition turned off until I reach a compression stroke. Then turn the ignition on for what I like to call the "golden" kick. The golden kick is that first kick when the engine is hot. It it don't start on that first kick.......well thats a whole nother subject.

If the ignition is timed and controlled properly, "kick-back" is a non-issue.
It should not happen.
Temperature has nothing to do with it, although over-advanced timing will cause both.
The rest is operator error.

Manual timer should stop that if you set it up right.and dont forget to retard it before kicking.
