Star hub rebuild question

#1

Post by kehughes »

Im rebuilding 2 star hubs.
All 4 sides have different plug fits: #1 .0006= needs standard for running fit
#2 .0008 = needs .0002 over
#3 .0010= needs .0004 over
#4 .0014= needs .0008 over

In order to keep from buying so many different sizes, can I use .0004 oversize as running fit on #2 also. This would reduce the clearance to .0008(desired is .0010 to .0015) . What are the negatives to running too tight? Is it better to be too tight or too loose?

I'm not going to tell you what rollers to use. But I will say loose trumps tight any time! Tight generates heat, and with enough of it your hub can weld itself together. And I never trust calculations, only true plug fits with actual rollers as eccentricity, roller manufacturing tolerances, etc, will all affect the fit!

As my father used to say,"its better to hear it than to smell it".If in doubt I will always set up on the loose side of the tolerance. star hubs are very forgiving.
