Setting star hub end play

Here's a question I've been dying to ask. I have always set the end play on a star hub dry. I assemble everything including the star gasket, minus the corks. Pop into the lathe between two centers and rig up my dial indicator. Recently someone told me I should be doing it wet. What's your take on this guys. Like to get a few opinions on this. i have done all of mine dry. i do lube everything by hand before final assembly and do not rely on the zerk for initial lubrication.

after that i give them a couple of pumps every oil change.

I do it "dry".

It makes it easier to have a sanitary final assembly.

And I do the star thrust endplay with nothing else in the hub.

Either way will work, dry will give a more accurate end play reading.

Got one more question? What do you set your end play at. They give no number in the older service books just that it shouldn't be that loose. That's not exactly NASA standard. Bob L

I always set them dry ( no grease to give a false reading!) and at as close to .005 as I can get them.

I always have done all mine dry------then lubed by hand, after all together ,a few pumps on the zerk alls good.---58flh
