Star hub measurements
Hello everybody!
The hubs on my bike is redone with Timken style bearings.
They don´t "stick out" as much as OEM´s sleeves, so I have to fit spacers to make the axle fit.
The info I am looking for is:
*Total lenght of complete assembeled hub.
*How much does the thrust bearing sleeve stick out from the hub/flange?
*Brake side: The lenght from the hub to the surface that hits the brakesleeve.

I have three freshly rebuilt star hubs in my shop right now. I will gladly provide the measurements, but would like to clarify on the last two question---- do you want the measurement from the spoke flange, or from the hub itself?

Jonas, I measured the three wheel hubs I have rebuilt. These are OEM hubs, and some of the internal parts were replaced as needed, and some parts were serviceable, so reinstalled. Because of this, there my be slight variations in measurements. But using my Chinese calipers, I came up with the following. I will post the measurements from all three wheels, so you can see the slight variation from wheel to wheel. Also, one of the hubs has some funky wrinkle blank paint on it, so may be a few thousands thick.
*Total lenght of complete assembeled hub. 4.745", 4.740", 4.725"
*How much does the thrust bearing sleeve stick out from the hub/flange? 1.330", 1.325", 1.325"
*Brake side: The lenght from the hub to the surface that hits the brakesleeve. (outer face of "roller bearing sleeve") .860", .860", .875"

Is the brake side measurment up from the bottom of the flange, or is it down from the "outer tip" of the hub?

The measurement is from the flat face of the wheel hub out to the outermost edge of the inner bearing sleeve; this is the part that the drum brake sleeve slides into. It protrudes slightly from the 'barrel' portion of the hub itself. I hope I am describing that properly.Continentalsavoy wrote:Thank you!

My hubs don´t seem to work too well with the Hydra axle. The brake side bearing is the same size as the right side, so the brake sleeve won´t slide into it. And the bearing is too far out to just fit the slotted area of the sleeve against it.
Plus, the bearings inner diameter is about 1/16" smaller than the axle.
When I got the bike, it had a Ohlins fork fitted (Swedish High performance racing stuff), and a ISR/Brembo BIG discbrake, so there was a special axle made for it, and the hub was offset from the rim.
Until now I have run a springer fork with a OEM brake, grinded-down axle with some home-made spacers, and I had to put spacers between the hub and the drum as well to make it work.
Now I´m about to fit a Hydra frontend and thou the "spacers and grinded-down axle" worked quite well, I think it´s a little bit too "barnyard"... And I don´t want to ruin the OEM axle and sleeve I got.
I´m thinking of a hub rebuild kit to take it back to stock.
So today I pulled the bearings out of the hub, but I´m not sure whether the hub is machined to fit the newer type bearings or not.
Do anybody have some photos of a bare hub or the correct measurements for a stock hub?
I don´t wanna buy a rebuild kit and find out it doesn´t fit..

I have no experience with the Timken style 'interchangeable' wheel hubs, but I don't think you can put rollers back in a hub that's been fitted with Timkens.
I do, however, have a couple bare hubs I can photograph and measure for you if it helps. You may end up with some custom machine work done; someone with a lathe should have no trouble producing the parts you need. You could also buy aftermarket parts and re-machine them to fit. I wouldn't have any qualms about that at all, and would only call it "barnyard" if the lathe was set up in the cow pasture.

It is not Timkens, it´s like a one-piece capped bearings about 12mm, apr. 0.47" thick.
Outer diameter is 40mm, apr. 1.574".
They got a 67mm, apr. 2.64" spacer inbetween them.
Would be real kind of you if you could measure a bare hub.

Okay, here's a closeup photo of the 'star' or 'thrust' side of the hub. This is the bearing race, and measures approximately 1.495" ID. The depth of the race is approximately .570" but is difficult to measure accurately. The 'lip' extends about .157" above the face of the hub.
This is the brake side, and there's a couple steps in it. The outermost portion is where the cork seal is fitted, and measures 1.850" ID. The next step in is the bearing race, and measures 1.750". The groove near the outer edge is for the outer retainer lock rings, and the next groove in is for the other inner retainer lock ring.
The distance from the outer lip of the hub to the outermost portion of the bearing race is .430".
The distance from the outer lip of the hub to the very inside lip is 1.095".
Please let me know if you need any other measurements, I have this hub right here on my desk.
