Should rear wheel be centered in swingarm.

#1

Post by Lowbikemike »

I have a 62 that I am trying to put back to original (or close to). Replacing the aftermarket square disc brake swingarm with the correct round swingarm, using a drum 67-72 brake. After assembly my wheel is offset about 1/4 to 3/8 inch to the non drum side. Is this correct or should the wheel be centered in the swingarm and frame? If I find a 62 brake will I see the same result.

Thanks for any information.

lowbikemike,
Are you using the 67 spacers and axle? If so , I think the ring gear ought to be in the right spot. The 67 axle is a bit longer than the duo-glide axle, and there are two spacers and the brake sleeve that need to be right for things to line up. The 67 brake hub is also wider than the stock 62 hub. You have a parts manual?

Yes, I am using the 67-72 axle and spacers.

Everything looks right and fits good. I don't have the engine or trans in so I don't know if everything lines up there or not. I've got a feeling my trans has a offset sprocket on it to work with the later model square swingarm.

I'm just trying to make sure I've got this right.

Your sprocket should not be offset. All 4 speed trannies had the same chain line regardless of year and rear brake type. The wheel should also be centered in the swingarm and in line with the front wheel to track properly. Do your front and rear wheels line up?

The 67 to 72 brake drum is wider so the rim gets trued up off center to the hub. I'll find my manual and post the info here.

Of course we're talkin' about the sealed bearing hub that has only one bearing, the other side has the bearing (front) or bearings (rear) in the brake drum.
I run this set-up on my '62

Didn't the later years use three bearings in the rear ?

I saw the lacing instructions in manual, but didn't quite understand what they were trying to say. So, the 67-72 wheel gets laced a little offset of the centerline of the wheel hub?

Thanks for all the help.

Took the back wheel off and checked the rim measurements as per the service manual. Rim is laced about 1/4 to far to the non drum side. If it was laced per the book, it will put the wheel right in the center of the bike and swingarm.

Thanks for the help, solved this problem, on to the next.
