1936 - 1940 Star-Hub
One complete wheel has four part #'s:
1. Wheel service (labor only).......................... 60-0125
2. 36-40 Big Twin Replica (Prkzd) Hub.............. 45-0335
3. 5-8 Gauge 16" Spoke Set S/S (Buchanan).... 45-0738
4. 16"x3" PermaChrome Rim W/ Lrg. Hole........ 52-0226
The wheel was true, radially and axlially to a 1/32" run-out.
I'll show the star side later. Look at the spindle of the hub and the ground-junction of the two-piece weld and at the very end over the snap ring. The snap ring groove is cut into the spindle. V-Twin's '41-up hub has a pressed-steel retainer at that area, that I erroneously referred to once as a "cheap-out" get-it-done part, when in fact their Replica '41-up hub is exactly like OEM. I'll post a pix of that '41 hub later, when i get over to knocking the fork cups out of the Pan frame, so you can see the difference in year changes. This is an excellent Replica piece in my opinion. Couldn't ask for a better part to roll on.

Re: 1936 - 1940 Star-Hub
I see this post has been here a while and i have a question. I had to swap hubs righ after relacing a wheel w buchannans stainless spokes. Never ran the wheel.
So id like to use the same spokes. I ordered a CCI STAR HUB WITH TIMKEN CONVERSION. Seems 20 of my 40 spokes fit into the brake side of the hub. But the other 20 holes on the star side of the hub are narrower and therefore the remaining 20 spokes dont fit.
Its always something. Does this sound familiar? 2 different hole sizes in the same hub? Or is this the taiwan special from cci?
Thanks!

OMARINE!--Did by anychance you try the spokes in the old hub??,--If not give it a go. If theres a problem it could be the spokes!,-BUT if its a go--THEN CCI would be the blame!--IS the DIAMETER of the outer hub the same?---Just thinkin off the top of my head --Anyway I can tell you that CCI-REPOP stuff is not that good!--I have had many issues with there fueltanks over the yrs.--Tabs missing--or welded in the wrong place!--Wrong petcock thread,& a few other PITA type of stuff!--I never used one of there hubs so I cant answer for that!---RICHIE

Re: 1936 - 1940 Star-Hub
Richie! The spokes went through the wide glide hub it was laced to. Im eyeballing internet pics of star hubs and i might be crazy but the holes appear larger on the brake side than on the star side. No issues fitting spokes inthe brake side but no dice on the star side.
Gonna have to call buchanans on monday. Think this made un taiwan hub will be safe? Thats my main concern.. Thx again!

Re: 1936 - 1940 Star-Hub
All H-D hubs from the first star hub in 1935 have the same size holes on both flanges and use the same spoke sizes on both sides. If your hub is different it is not correct.

Re: 1936 - 1940 Star-Hub
Ok so the ebay store that i bought it from isnt responding which i expected. So my question is:
Would i be making this hub unsafe if i opened up the smaller holes a bit to match the other side of the flange?
Its "billet steel" per the little cci description. Im usually against modding wheel stuff....
Thanks!

Omarine---The other side already has the correct holes in it.By opening the opposite side to the exact size as the good side ,I personally thing it will be GOOD!---BUT you should not have to go thru all that BS!---They should make good on the HUB or give you your MONEY BACK!---just my 2---respectfully----RICHIE

Re: 1936 - 1940 Star-Hub
UPDATE:
Hate to beat a dead horse again, but i now have an oem stepped star hub. Went and powdercoated it and just like before, the star side spoke holes are smaller. I have bucannan spokes that are .15" on the spoke and .22" where it widens by the head. They fit into the brake side flange but not the star side. Fken strange. I guess its back to buchannans for 20 new spokes because i will not drill into an oem hub to make the holes wider. Cropping cut a bit out but you can still see where pulling the spoke in it stops.

Re: 1936 - 1940 Star-Hub
Theres powdercoat in there but i think the resl problem is my spokes are 'swaged'. In looking at the buchannan site, i think if i just get single diameter spokes it will seat just fine into the hub. The swaged part grows to .22" diameter and thats where it has gotten stuck both on this hub and a previous CCI taiwann special. I was quick to blame the CCI part when i think it might just be a matter pf correcting the spoke to single diameter
Never had an oem wheel wheel apart. Are those spokes single diameter? Just thought id ask before i go order the wrong thing again.
Thanks!

Re: 1936 - 1940 Star-Hub
All factory spokes are butted (two diameter) spokes from the early days to current time. And all were the same diameter on both flanges of the hubs. Powder coat is plenty thick enough to make a difference on spokes. The 18" spokes from '35 up and the 16" from '40 up are the same size on both dimensions.

Re: 1936 - 1940 Star-Hub
with a small circular file, I was able to scrape off enough powdercoat to get the spokes in. strange the other side was fine, but I'll take it! Thanks again fellas

Re: 1936 - 1940 Star-Hub
In doing some research on step hubs I recently discovered that '35-'36 RL only rear hubs had a smaller spoke diameter and actually have a different part number. It is possible that the hub you have was originally from one of those bikes. '36 Knuckle and all from '37-'39 share the same larger spoke.
