Anyone know what length axle I will need if I convert my panheads drum brake to a disc brake/caliper?

The axle length remains the same, but must be the right type for the spacers and sleeves used. Are you changing the wheel as well? and are you talking front or rear?

With out knowing anymore about the bike, if you plan on running a disc brake I'd say the axle length will be determined by the distance between your axle plates. You should be able to measure the outside to outside dimension and select your axle based on that, no?

It is the rear axle I'm speaking of. If the axle length remains the same, why do the threads stick out passed the frame. Am I needing a outer axle spacer to take up the slack? I can post pic's of you would like to see what I mean. Thanks.

Yes, pics would be good. And all H-D axles have various spacers and sleeves to make them function as intended with chain adjusters.

O.D. of the frame in the axle area is 9 1/8 and the I.D. is 8 5/8. Axle threads sticking out past frame.

It is supposed to be that way. You have it in from the wrong side, and it goes through a sleeve and spacer combination that allows the chain adjuster to work properly. Depending on what type of disc conversion you do you will likely need to fabricate spacers, however some aftermarket companies have kits that include them.
