Hellooooo
Just wondering if anyone can explain a little better than what the books is saying about how to achieve the proper hub off set when truing a wheel, where to and how to measure this. Its for a 58.
Thanks,
Northman

Re: Star hub offset
You want the wheel centered on the hub.
Hand tighten the nipples so each spoke has the same number of spoke threads exposed, then you can begin trueing.

Re: Star hub offset
Jerry, thanks for the reply.
I guess I needed to be more specific, the part that had me stumped was the figure 2c-6 in "the book" with getting the correct distance in side ways centering with the hub. I read it a couple more times and its sunk in, but just wondering if this is the best way for allinment and tracking or if anyone has come up with something better. I guess if it worked fine then it ought to work fine now.
I also had other theories on the topic from other parties that I questioned, so I wanted to get info from other sources.

Re: Star hub offset
Since I've done mine twice (second hub last week). I looked at the drawings and went for broke. If all your spokes are the same length you're going to end up "about" the middle of the hub. I trued mine last week on the rear of the bike and with the standard spacing it all works out fine (being in the middle of the hub).

Re: Star hub offset
If the measurements are confusing you, just use your front fork for a truing stand and lace and true it so that the rim is exactly centered between the legs. It will work for either wheel as they are the same! It will work for springer or wide glide, just leave the brake assembly off. The leg is a convenient spot to attach a pointer or dial indicator!
